Topic 6: Professional SMART Goals, Leadership, and Advocacy

Throughout Topic 6 of SPD-577, I focused on developing professional SMART goals and strengthening my leadership and advocacy skills as a special education teacher and future autism specialist. Clinical Field Experience F provided an opportunity to reflect on my professional growth, collaborate with my mentor, and identify meaningful goals for the next one, five, and ten years.

My professional goals emphasize family engagement, evidence-based instructional practices, professional collaboration, leadership development, and community advocacy. These areas are particularly important when supporting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.

As part of this experience, I also developed and recorded a Leadership and Advocacy Presentation highlighting the importance of collaboration among educators, families, and community stakeholders. This presentation reinforced my commitment to promoting inclusive practices, strengthening family-school partnerships, and advocating for meaningful educational opportunities for students with ASD.

My Six Professional SMART Goals

Short-Term Goals: Within One Year (October 2027)

Goal 1: Strengthening Family Engagement

By October 2027, I will provide two professional learning sessions for staff focused on accessible family communication and culturally responsive IEP collaboration. I will review team communication and shared decision-making records monthly and document at least one follow-up action during each review.

Goal 2: Implementing Evidence-Based Practices

By October 2027, I will complete three ASD-focused professional learning activities and implement two evidence-based strategies in my classroom, documenting baseline and follow-up student progress data to evaluate their effectiveness.

Long-Term Goals: Within Five Years (October 2031)

Goal 3: Developing Leadership as an Autism Specialist

By October 2031, I will serve in a formal autism specialist or instructional coaching role and facilitate at least four professional learning or coaching sessions each school year, collecting participant feedback after each session.

Goal 4: Expanding Community Partnerships

By October 2031, I will coordinate a network of at least five community service partners and organize two accessible family transition-information events annually, tracking referrals and collecting family feedback.

Long-Term Goals: Within Ten Years (October 2036)

Goal 5: Leading District-Level Family Engagement Initiatives

By October 2036, I will lead or co-lead one district initiative designed to improve accessible family participation in IEP planning. I will evaluate implementation at least annually using staff practice checks and caregiver feedback.

Goal 6: Mentoring and Supporting Special Education Professionals

By October 2036, I will establish a mentoring structure supporting at least ten special education teachers or paraprofessionals through documented coaching cycles and annual reviews of participant feedback.

Professional Commitment

These goals reflect my commitment to continuous professional development, collaboration, and advocacy for students with autism spectrum disorder and their families. Through ongoing education, mentorship, and leadership opportunities, I hope to strengthen educational practices and help create supportive learning environments where students with ASD can succeed.

Clinical Field Experience F: Leadership and Advocacy Presentation Outline

As part of Clinical Field Experience F, I developed a presentation outline to organize the key topics, research-based strategies, and advocacy recommendations included in my Leadership and Advocacy Presentation.

The outline focuses on strengthening family-school partnerships, supporting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), increasing access to community resources, and encouraging collaboration among educators, families, and other stakeholders.

Developing this outline helped me organize my presentation and communicate important information about leadership, advocacy, and supporting students with ASD and their families.
