Throughout Topics 3–5 of my Master of Arts in Autism Spectrum Disorder program at Grand Canyon University, I have continued developing my professional knowledge, leadership abilities, and advocacy skills. As a special education teacher working with students with diverse learning and behavioral needs, I recognize the importance of collaboration, evidence-based practices, and meaningful partnerships with families and community organizations.
The assignments and clinical field experiences across these topics have strengthened my understanding of professional leadership, my ability to evaluate research-based instructional practices, my collaboration with educational stakeholders, and my ability to develop resources that support students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families.
This section of my electronic portfolio highlights my professional growth, completed coursework, clinical field experiences, and continued commitment to becoming an effective autism specialist and educational advocate.
Topic 3: Professional Collaboration and Leadership Development
Throughout Topic 3 of SPD-577, I continued developing my understanding of professional collaboration, leadership, and the importance of constructive feedback when supporting students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Through my coursework and professional experiences, I recognized that effective leadership requires open communication, active listening, and a willingness to learn from others.
One of the most valuable experiences during this topic was participating in the peer review process for my Autism Action Research Project. Receiving feedback from educational professionals and a fellow graduate student helped me identify areas where I could strengthen my research, particularly in explaining how family involvement and collaboration influence student outcomes.
As a special education teacher, I understand the importance of working collaboratively with families, paraprofessionals, related service providers, and administrators. These professional relationships help ensure that students receive consistent instructional and behavioral support across educational settings.
Moving forward, I plan to apply what I have learned by continuing to seek constructive feedback, strengthening my communication skills, and supporting colleagues through collaboration and professional learning opportunities. These experiences have reinforced my commitment to becoming an effective autism specialist who advocates for students, families, and educators.
During Topic 3, I participated in a collaborative peer review process for my Autism Action Research Project, which examined the relationship between family involvement and student progress for students with ASD. Feedback from practicing educators and a fellow graduate student helped me identify opportunities to strengthen the clarity, organization, and interpretation of my research findings.
This experience demonstrated the importance of professional collaboration, constructive feedback, and reflective practice. It also reinforced my commitment to improving family-school partnerships and using research to guide educational decisions.
