Topic 5: Autism Action Research and Professional Growth
Throughout Topic 5 of SPD-577, I completed my Autism Action Research Project, which examined the relationship between family involvement in the IEP process and educational outcomes for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This project provided an opportunity to connect current research with my professional experiences as a special education teacher.
My research reinforced the importance of meaningful family engagement, culturally responsive communication, and ongoing collaboration between educators and caregivers. Through analyzing student progress and family participation, I gained a deeper understanding of how strong family-school partnerships can contribute to students' academic, behavioral, and social-emotional development.
Completing this project also strengthened my ability to evaluate research, interpret educational data, incorporate constructive feedback, and reflect critically on my professional practices. These skills are essential for my continued growth as an autism specialist and educational leader.
Moving forward, I plan to apply the knowledge gained from this research by encouraging greater family participation in educational planning, improving communication with caregivers, and advocating for accessible resources that support students with ASD and their families.

Community Resource Guide: Supporting Students with ASD and Their Families
Clinical Field Experience E: Community Resource Guide
As part of Clinical Field Experience E, I developed a digital Community Resource Guide to help students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families access valuable services and support within the Phoenix metropolitan area.
The guide focuses on community resources that support educational opportunities, vocational training, employment, independent living, and family advocacy. It also emphasizes the importance of collaboration among educators, families, and community organizations.
Developing this resource strengthened my understanding of the importance of connecting families with accessible information and community-based support services. As a future autism specialist, I recognize that advocacy extends beyond the classroom and includes helping families navigate available resources throughout their children's educational and transition experiences.
